XX Xavier Fàbrega Solidarity Award Do screens connect you to people?

10 February, 2023

Do screens connect you to people?”: Under this title, a new edition of the Premio Solidaridad Xavier Fàbrega is framed, a literary and artistic contest that becomes an annual benchmark in the Girona regions.

Three years ago we thought of this theme for the Award, the pandemic arrived and it had to be cancelled. It seemed to us that now we could recover it since it has had, and it has more validity than ever.

Consult the rules of the contest.

This year, and as usual, a new edition of the Xavier Fàbrega Solidarity Award will take place for primary, secondary and high school students in Catalan schools and for the public in general.

This award, which has been established as a benchmark, offers the possibility of submitting proposals in different formats ranging from narrative or writing, to drawing, and photography.

This edition, which is the 20th, proposes a topic of general interest but which is far from the topics raised in previous editions. This twist, nothing improvised, puts the spotlight on a hot topic that affects us in our surrounding world, in interpersonal relationships and in our lives: “Do screens connect you to people?”

It is well known how screens are integrated into our daily life and how they have modified many aspects of our existence. Its use or abuse determines or can determine our future as full people. Without a doubt, this proposal for the XX Solidaridad Prize will make us reflect on this drift and on the possible solutions, showing a fairly realistic reflection of our society.

Today we live surrounded by screens of all kinds, which demand our attention constantly. The screens are seductive: they open windows to the world, and they are able to solve a lot of doubts and problems in the blink of an eye. They also offer us great opportunities for distraction, which if enjoyed, can turn into hours of exposure to the infinite possibilities of digital environments. The screens captivate children and adults; with a simple click they transport us to hitherto unknown realities, to distant territories. Do they also distance us from the people we have next to us? Do they make our lives easier, or more stressful? Do they make it difficult for us to have conversations with friends, to look them directly in the eyes? Are we cutting back on the pleasant adventures we could have in the real world? Is life worth living in cyberspace? Do they make us more open or more closed in our preferences? Do they make us more free, or more slaves to immediacy?
